Kilmarnock FC/Show Racism the Red Card anti-racism seminar
Rugby Park, Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock FC held their first anti-racism seminar in the famous Park Suite at Rugby Park. Despite it being their day off, Killie players Kris Boyd, Steven Naismith and Gary McDonald turned out to face the questions of over 140 local school children. Also on the panel were Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies and East Ayrshire Council education representative, Anne Basford.
The media also turned out in great force, with local press and radio on hand to interview players and officials on the subject of racism in football. Another panelist was SRTRC’s very own Imran Alam, who recalled some of his personal experiences with relation to racism.
The attentive young audience was shown parts of the SRTRC educational video and the 'A Safe Place' video on asylum seekers and refugees. Jim Jefferies was also on hand to offer some words of wisdom and recall his personal managerial experiences from the game of football.
Angela Burnett, the club secretary and one of the key organisers of the event, arranged for all the kids to go on a stadium tour and as part of their goodie bags, were treated to free tickets for Killie’s last game of the season against Dunfermline Athletic at Rugby Park.
All in all another successful event with each kid leaving with some form of satisfaction, whether it was by having their question answered by a player or the delights of sitting in the dug outs.
