October 2005 Fortnight of Action - Action Reports
The Honest Men Trust Day of Action
The Honest Men Trust organised a Day of Action at Somerset Park for Ayr
Uniteds' home match v Alloa on 15th October. The event was held in partnership
with Unison, who sponsored the match, and Ayr United, South Ayrshire Council
and the Transport & General Workers Union who backed the Trusts initiative
to support the Show Racism the Red Cards' Fortnight of Action.
The
Honest Men Trust turned the Day into a major event. Players of both sides
wore the SRTRC T-Shirts purchased by the Trust during their warm up, ball
girls also wore SRTRC T-Shirts throughout the match while around 100 T-shirts
were given out free to kids on the day, along with stickers, badges, Scotland
posters and Red cards. There was also a full page article published in
the match programme.
The Trust also unveiled their new advertising hoarding to support their
United Against Racism campaign as well as two similar banners that were
displayed around the ground.
The
Trust and Unison had previously ran a competition on a local radio sports
programme to give the chance for a child to become the mascot for the
day for devising a local anti-racism slogan. The competition was won by
9 year old Chloe Davidson who came up with 'It doesn't matter black or
white, football players shouldn't pick a fight'. Two runners up were Callum
Connaghton (7) with 'We may all look different but we are united and breathe
the same Ayr' and 12 year old Declan McClymont suggested 'Ayr unite, black
or white' who were also present on the day.
This was the launch of The Honest Men Trusts' campaign and it is anticipated that other events will be held to promote the anti-racism message.
