October 2005 Fortnight of Action - Action Reports
5-a-side Football Tournament
Pilrig School, Leith, Edinburgh
During
the afternoons of Tuesday 18th to Thursday 20th October 2005, Bryan Maughan
from the Pilmeny Youth Centre Leith, Edinburgh organised and managed a
5- A -Side Football Tournament interspersed with anti-racism workshops
for a lively group of 8 to 12 years olds.
The boys were members of Sikh Sanjog, Citadel Youth Club and Dosti Muslim
Group. Youth workers from these groups added warmth and enthusiasm into
this Red Card event and helped ensure all boys enjoyed themselves.
Members
of the Redpath Football Club supplied expertise and a degree of formality
to the match play. The overall aim of the project was to develop tolerance
and respect by building friendships through the medium of football. The
highlight of the day was when the boys to their obvious delight played
and won against the youth workers and football coaches!
A photographer from Edinburgh's Evening News visited and took photographs
and also local councillor, Philip J. Attridge (Ward of Lorne) came down
to lend support and witness the project. The enthusiasm and dedication
of Bryan insured that this event was a success.
The players not only showed their skills on the field but also designed
some great posters to show racism the red card.
