Livingston FC unite against racism, Almondvale Stadium
Over 100 West Lothian schoolchildren attended Livingston FC's Almondvale
Stadium on Monday 20th February to hear players Roddy McKenzie and David
McNamee answer young people's questions about racism in Scotland.
Jackie McNamara Sr of the SPFA joined Livingston goalkeeper Roddy McKenzie
and David McNamee and four local schools - Addiewell Primary, Williamston
Primary, St Paul's Primary and Bathgate Academy to show racism the red
card. After watching the SRTRC video, the students enthusiastically asked
the panel some great questions and raised some very interesting points.
Jackie
McNamara had the tough task of choosing the best question to award the
lucky winner with a football autographed by the Livingston squad. The
winning question came from Mhairi Strachan of Bathgate Academy. The winner
was then photographed with four of her fellow pupils, the players and
her prize.
All of the pupils were winners and went home with a SRTRC goodie bag
and Livingston FC magazine. Livingston have been great supporters of Show
Racism the Red Card, in August 2005 the club teamed up with Glasgow Ansar
to run training sessions in order to promote a unique Summer Football
Coaching Programme for budding young Footballers. The scheme will take
place again this year and will be expanded with other clubs getting involved.
Overall this was a highly enjoyable event, in which the kids asked some
excellent questions. Hopefully the message was made clear by all present
that racism is not welcome in football or in society. Show Racism the
Red Card would like to thank David McNamee, Roddy McKenzie and Jackie
McNamara for taking part. We would also like to thank Leigh Robertson
and Livingston FC for hosting the event and providing snacks for everyone.
Thanks are also due to West Lothain Council for arranging the schools
to participate and the Teachers for bringing along their students.
