Heriot Primary hold Red Card Day

Following on from their sponsored jog earlier in the year as part of their campaign to kick out racism, Heriot Primary in Foxbar Paisley organised a Show Racism The Red Card Day.

The day got off to great start with an assembly of young people welcoming their friends, family, Show Racism the Red Card and special guest Mark Hateley. The students had compiled an anthology of poems some of which were read by the pupils. The anthology had been published and sold by the students to raise money for UNICEF and Show Racism The Red Card. There was also a raffle and a paid dress down day for the young people, all of whom wore Show Racism the Red Card badges which they had designed, made and sold themselves.

The students then encouraged their audience to take part in a short exercise to demonstrate that to discriminate against people because of their race or nationality is wrong. This was followed by more poems and songs and a play - 'The child with green hair'.

The young people sang The World in Union, and then there was a quick Question and Answer session with Show Racism The Red Card at which wristbands were given out to the pupils asking questions and raising points.

Finally, Mark Hateley took to the stage for a very popular Q&A answering some great questions about his experiences of racism in the game as a player with Rangers and England and now as a commentator. Mark drew the winning tickets for the raffle which included some great prizes.

Class teacher Carolyn Nixon said "The children and staff wanted to show racism has no place in sport or life in general so we decided to start up the campaign as part of a social enterprise topic. The teachers at Heriot Primary are all very proud of the children and their stand against racism."
