Show Racism the Red Card & the SPL - Day of Action
Throughout Scotland and Europe
Wednesday night’s Bank of Scotland Premierleague fixtures marked the finale of two weeks of co-ordinated anti-racist action across European football. The campaign was organised by Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) and Show Racism the Red Card (SRTRC) and built upon SRTRC’s first SPL weekend of action which took place in January 2004.
In partnership with SRTRC, all 42 professional clubs in Scotland had been involved over the previous two weeks for the first time, making a significant contribution to the FARE events taking place in 33 countries Europe-wide.
The campaign came at a time when racist attacks continued to rise in Scottish society. Football is a powerful medium to break down the barriers of ignorance, which lead to racist attacks. SRTRC have been delighted by the support shown by SPL players over the last year, attending events, launches and in general, setting the example that racism has no place in Scotland.
In the Bank of Scotland Premierleague players from all 12 clubs ‘showed racism the red card’ on the Wednesday night before kick-off, with articles in match programmes, tannoy announcements and on websites also spreading the anti-racist message. This followed similar actions that took place at all Scottish Football League fixtures on Saturday 16th October.
Crucially, several fans organisations launched their own anti-racist community initiatives over the fortnight to send out a clear message that racists aren't welcome within their ranks, or around their club.
