Tuesday 30th November 2004
Show Racism the Red Card seminar
Pittodrie Stadium, Home of Aberdeen.

Another great and successful event for SRTRC, this time in the colder climes of Aberdeen. Aberdeen Football Club's world famous Pittodrie Stadium, and even famous International Lounge was host to this event, held in conjunction with the club and Aberdeen City Council. Approximately 85 school children, from 5 different schools attended the presentation, in which they were shown clips from the SRTRC video, as well as the 'A Safe Place' video on asylum seekers. Roddy McNulty, Show Racism the Red Card's Campaign Coordinator for Scotland gave an exciting, yet informative introduction about the organisation and then facts behind racism in football and society.

The kids then had the chance to 'grill' the panellists, which included Aberdeen footballer Michael Hart, Councillor Pamela MacDonald, Race Equality Education Officer Hilda Smith, and SRTRC's very own Roddy McNulty. The quality of the questions was of a high calibre, albeit with a little help from the teachers.

The afternoon ended with an autograph signing session with Michael Hart and Zander Diamond, as well as club mascot Angus the Bull. Local press were in attendance to report and photograph the event, including a radio interview for BBC Scotland with Roddy. The day’s good news was made better when the City Council placed an order to purchase 100 Education Packs; one for every school covered under Aberdeen City Council's education borders. This purchase further strengthened the relationship between SRTRC and our Aberdeen colleagues.

Our particular thanks go to Vicky Hill, who is the Marketing Coordinator at Aberdeen FC, Race Equality Education Officer Hilda Smith, Convener of Aberdeen City Council's Education and Leisure Committee Councillor Pamela MacDonald, and Hugh Roche from the council’s education department.
