Background

The UKAC, now in its seventh year, is the highest profile Asian football tournament in the UK. The event has been established to show case the talent within the Asian community in the arena of football. The event attracts the seven best Asian football teams from across England and one team representing Scotland.

The event acts as a catalyst to bring together people from all communities in Glasgow in a sporting arena. The event helps to break down stereotypes and negative perceptions of the fact that Asians can play football. The original aims of the championship when initiated in 1999 still ring true today, in terms of breaking down the barriers for Asian football talent into the mainstream, challenge racism and inequality and breakdown the stereotypes and perceptions at all levels of the game.

UKAC 2004

In 2004 the event attracted 5000 people with an equal representation of all of Glasgow's communities. The event attracted a large number of young people from both the Black Minority Ethnic and indigenous communities. By using popular sports such as football, awareness was raised in young people across Scotland that racism in all its forms is not acceptable and acted to help break down cultural barriers. Scotland will be all the better for making sport available to everyone, including its ethnic minorities.

The event each year attracts more and more media publicity from both local and national organisations. An example of this would be the highlights of the game shown on The World Football Show, and Scottish Television (STV) as well as SASA being invited onto the STV sports show.

At the 2004 UKAC, a Saturday Sports Festival was organised. This took place at Glasgow Green and ran from 10am – 2pm. Around 150 boys and girls attended the event and participated in a range of sporting activities. Rangers Football Club also supported the festival by providing a number of professional Coaches for the day. The aim was to provide young people with fun and recreation and be part of the atmosphere of the UK event. All young people involved were given T-Shirts to give them a small memento of the day.
