Police revisit Sikh assault scene

Detectives hunting race attackers who cut off a young Sikh boy's hair have returned to the scene of the incident in Edinburgh exactly one week on.

Lothian and Borders officers visited areas around Pilrig Park and Leith Walk between 1800 and 2100 GMT on Tuesday.

Police quizzed 120 people in a bid to jog memories and trace witnesses.

The 15-year-old was punched and kicked by four white youths who then cut off his hair - an act considered deeply offensive to the Sikh religion.

'Viciously assaulted'

Det Sgt Paul Carroll, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "We spoke to 120 local people on Tuesday night as it was a week ago a young man was viciously assaulted in the area."

He said they wanted to trace people who might regularly use the area, such as those coming home from work or walking their dogs.

"We want to trace anyone who thinks they know who was involved or who saw anything suspicious on the night this young man was attacked," he said.

"The people we spoke to last night were mostly aware of what had happened and many expressed their concern about the incident.

"We will now analyse the information that we received on Tuesday night and hopefully that will take us a step closer to tracing the culprits."

On Sunday more than 200 people from around the UK attended a vigil at the park to pray for inter-racial tolerance and peace.
