Hockey Shows Racism The Red Card

Scottish Hockey UnionPlayers and officials of the Scottish National Indoor Hockey League will be showing their support for the Show Racism the Red Card campaign at Perth's Bells Sports Centre on Sunday 10 February 2008.

This is the date for the Annual Knock-Out event involving the top 4 women's and top 4 men's indoor teams as well as Under 18 Boy's and Girl's Cup Finals and a number of Under 15 district games.

Emulating their footballing counterparts Red Cards will be displayed before matches and all players will wear Show Racism the Red Card campaign t-shirts in their pre-match warm ups.

Councillor Willie Robertson who chairs the Perth & Kinross Community Safety Partnership said "Having successfully worked with St. Johnstone Football Club on a number of previous Show Racism the Red card initiatives we are delighted that the Scottish Hockey Union has now also agreed to support us to deliver the message that any form of racism or discrimination is unacceptable in Perth & Kinross. Anyone in Perth & Kinross who wishes to report a racist incident can do so by contacting one of the agencies involved in the Racist Incident Multi-agency Panel (RIMAP) - Perth & Kinross Council, Tayside Police, NHS Tayside, Perth Citizens Advice Bureau or Victim Support."

Show Racism the Red Card's National Campaign Co-ordinator Billy Singh said "Racism is a problem which is evident throughout society, we have previously worked with Perth & Kinross' RIMAP to challenge racism through the medium of football. We are now enthused by the determination of the Scottish Hockey Union to unite with the anti-racist movement to send out a clear message that there is no room for racism in Scotland."

Scottish Hockey Development Manager Ben Glencross elaborated "Making hockey accessible to everyone is essential for the growth of hockey. We are working to remove all barriers to hockey, be it racism or any other discrimination. Everyone can play a part and hockey is working with partners like Perth & Kinross RIMAP to help members stamp out racism."
