Birmingham City FC, March 16th 2009
A packed out Gold Suite at St. Andrew’s Stadium, home of Birmingham City FC, was the venue for an excellent anti-racism educational event, featuring some of Show Racism the Red Card’s longest serving honorary patrons
More about this event...
Over 100 young people from six local Primary Schools attended to see a screening of the SRtRC DVD and take part in a Q&A on racism with Dave Bennett (former Coventry City FC, Manchester City FC and Cardiff City FC), Gary Bennett (ex – Sunderland AFC & Manchester City FC), Leroy Rosenior (former striker with West Ham United FC, Fulham FC and QPR) and former Birmingham City FC Captain and current Academy Coach, Kevan Broadhurst. Kevan has played for the Blues on over 170 occasions and had also managed Northampton Town FC and Walsall.
A short education session got the event underway and the young people responded well and demonstrated a good knowledge of racism when answering questions from SRtRC staff. Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card, then introduced the film and gave some background on the campaign. During the screening of the SRtRC DVD the film was stopped half-way through so that Leroy Rosenior could share his experiences and thoughts with the audience, which engaged the young peoples’ attention further.
The Q&A session that followed the film screening was very good. The young people had been thinking hard about the questions and had the additional incentive of not only Red Card T-Shirts for the best questions, but also a Birmingham City FC shirt, signed by the whole squad. The best question winners were able to have their photograph taken with the panel and at the end of the event the whole of the audience were able to get the panel to sign items in their SRtRC goody bags.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank all at Birmingham City FC for working with the campaign on this event for the third year in a row, particularly Jessica Birch who helped us to organise the day.
